Remain In God's Love

Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, (39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We can not be open to it or not be willing to receive it. But it is there.

The closing context of this chapter seems to be that if we will be “IN” Christ JESUS, we will be guaranteed;

1. To remain in GOD’S love,
2. To be destined to a life of serving HIM, which will help conform us into HIS image
3. To a calling, that will justify us and bring us into glorification.

And that’s not all a life “IN” JESUS will bring, it’s simply all we can cover this morning.

If your life isn’t “IN” JESUS it can be right now, if you’ll respond to HIS call.

More Than Conquerors

Romans 8:37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

All things we are conquerors even when taken to death. For to absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord.

Paul is Quoting Psalm 44:22

Who Can Separate Us Form Christ's Love

Romans 8:35-36 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

The Answer to Verse 35 is: NO WAY

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Conviction Draws Us Towards GOD

Romans 8:34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

REMEMBER: Conviction draws us towards GOD condemnation draws us away.

Satan can condemn but it holds no weight since JESUS clears us before the Father.

The Holy Spirit may be convicting me of sin, but He isn't condemning me. Condemnation is the work of Satan.

Romans 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

If GOD has already paid with HIS Son, is HE now going to hold back?

Who Can Be Against Us?

Rom 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Paul uses these rhetorical questions to lead us to wonderful biblical truths; (1st) God is for us; (2nd) He will freely give us all things; (3rd) He has justified us; (4th) He prays for us; and (5th) no power can separate us from His love.

Who can be against me? The world, the flesh, and the devil are against me. against me.
But these are no match for God who helps me, strengthens me, and works to present me faultless before His glorious presence with great joy.

He Also Called

Romans 8:30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Glorified meaning you will get a new glorified body so you can live in HIS presence for all eternity.

All these are a work of GOD; our part is simply to believe HIM at HIS word.

Again notice the order. The predestined are; The ones HE called. Has GOD called you? Do you or did you respond to HIS call?
IF so you've been justified. Justified meaning cleansed from your sins so much so that is just as though you never did it.

And since you've been justified you also will be glorified.

Conformed to the Image of His Son

Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

The Doctrine of Predestination or Devine Election, has been so twisted and made so confusing when it was intended to be something that would leave us with great peace.

Notice the order given in these verses. 1st is GOD'S foreknowledge HE already knows what is going to happen, HE knows your end.2nd is predestination because GOD already knows HE can predestine.
Like watching a rerun, you already know the end.

From a heavenly prospective this is simple. From and earthly prospective this raises all kinds of questions.

Predestination is something GOD does, it’s HIS part. It is not something that should allow us to rest and think my life “IN” Jesus is a done deal. Neither you nor I know our finish.

Every time the Bible speaks on the subject it shows GOD predestined, so that some work might be done in the life of the one predestined.

Here is Romans that work is one of being Conformed to the image of His Son. That is no easy task but if we will submit to it, by denying self, picking up our cross daily and following JESUS it will happen.

In Ephesians. When Paul speaks on predestination It also says, Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them

In 1 Peter. It says, 1 Peter 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

Understand predestination is something GOD can do from heaven, not something we can claim and then ignore the rest of what the bible says.

Enough on predestination our part in this verse was to Conformed to the image of His Son. This is what GOD sent the His Son into our lives to do.
Conformed means having the same form as another, similar, being like JESUS.

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Prove by learning to do, correcting when wrong, pressing for HIS will.

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Work out by allowing GOD’S will to become yours.

Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Part of the work of the Holy Spirit in our life, is to get us busy being like JESUS.

Rest in God

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Another wonderful truth to those who will live by faith. I can rest in GOD not only accomplishing HIS will but in GOD causing things to work out for the good no matter how bad a particular thing may seem.

ONLY GOD CAN MAKE THIS PROMISE.

Purpose of Prayer

Romans 8:27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

As I pray in the Spirit, I have a wonderful peace if I will continue in faith believing the Spirit is praying perfectly because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

That folks is the purpose of prayer, to accomplish GOD'S will. Don't believe those false teachers who claim you need to just have faith and GOD will do it.

The Spirit Himself Makes Intercession

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

This groaning is one of the ways a person prays in the Spirit.

In Jude 15:20 we are told to pray in the Spirit. Scripturally speaking this would also refer to praying in tongues. As mentioned in Acts.2, 1 Cor.12-14

Paul uses this verse as an illustration to living in hope or faith, whatever you want to call it.Just like we wait and hope for JESUS to come and redeem us.

That faith is the same as when we groan in the Spirit because we don't know what to pray.So in vs.22 all of creation is groaning, vs.23 we as Christains's are groaning and here the Spirit groans within us.

Groan's = to sigh, murmur, pray inaudibly:--with grief,

We eagerly await GOD'S perfect timing by persevering = patiently cheerfully enduring.

Prior to the house closing isn’t their an anxiousness or hopeful excitement????

We Were Saved In This Hope

Romans 8:24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?

If you where going to buy a house you hope the deal goes through. ( loan is approved, contract signed, escrow closes...) Once you own the house you don't hope for it any more, hope is over because your in.

We are saved by faith or hope in JESUS to redeem these bodies.

Now, if we see that this is done we are no longer living in hope because seeing it would mean it's already done, and why would someone hope in what they already see as having happened.

Romans 8:23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

We too long to be with JESUS, and see things restored in proper balance. Which will not happen until the redemption of our body. This is what the terms "children of GOD and sons of GOD means in vs.'s 19 & 21.

This is the feeling we have when you say, "Come quickly LORD JESUS" or "take me home LORD".

Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Being a Born Again Christian, will require going through some sufferings. Some are self-inflicted it's the battle between the flesh and the spirit. Some are attacks from other people because they have a problem with your Adoption. Some is from satan who is diligently trying to stop you from experiencing what GOD has for you.

John 12:24-26 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

The Spirit of Adoption

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

The Born Again Christian isn't under bondage of obey or die. Fear relationship. But is under adoption where we have a family relationship

When the Christian is "born again," they are adopted into a relationship with the family of God. John1:12

Believers are adopted sons (Gal. 4:5; Eph. 1:5), not slaves (Gal. 4:7); so they need not be enslaved to sin or in fear.

In New Testament times as today, adopted sons enjoyed the same privileges as natural-born sons. So, instead of cowering in slave-like fear, Christians can approach God in an intimate way calling Him Abba, Father.

But if we tried to approach the relationship in our flesh we would still be separated and not part of HIS family, it would be a fearful visit.

When you’re adopted you need that reassurance that you’re HIS child. That reassurance is the Holly Spirit IN you.

Put to Death the Deeds of Sin

Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

When we live according to the flesh it's such a put down on GOD. HE frees us from this bondage to sin (abusive relationship) and then we return to it.

We must put to death those area's of the flesh that try to dominate our lives. In doing this we're allowing the Spirit to reign in your life and there is victory for those who are in Christ JESUS.

Put to death the deeds, this is the same as, to[1] reckon as dead. Romans 6:11 It's a play on the word die[2] written before it. It's like saying, [3]If you do not kill sin, it will kill you. Like what GOD said to Cain;

Genesis 4:6-7 So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."

To Live in the Spirit

Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

This verse sounds a lot like a conversation JESUS has with Nicodemus in John 3.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
John 3:5-6 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

When I'm born again, the old things pass away and all things become new. Conversion takes place by the Spirit of God, and I become as new as when God created Adam.
I become born again. Spirit, Soul, Body led.

The Carnal Mind Is Mindful of the Body

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

Carnal mind being led by the body is against or hostility towards GOD. Because if GOD is allowed into the mind\soul, then the body will be placed in subjection to the spirit.

How can you tell the difference?? The carnal mind is mindful of the body. It delights in anything that satisfies the flesh. Foods... Recognition - job, successes, money. Personal pleasures - hobby's, toys ... sex, pornography ... ... These are the things that are most important to the carnal mind.

The spirit minded person delights in the things of GOD. Relationship with JESUS, the bible, church, serving HIM, helping others... ... still eats food, fulfills personal pleasures, has a job, if married has sex but is not controlled by them. Places these things in subjection to GOD'S leading.CARNAL MIND DOESN'T DO THIS.

JESUS said in Matthew 6:31-33

31 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' ALL DESIRES OF THE FLESH
32 "For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Simply place GOD first before bodily appetites.

The carnal mind being at enmity with GOD comes up with all kinds of harebrain ideas. Believing there is no GOD they look at themselves and see they are similar to an animal therefore they conclude we came from the animal rather then GOD.They look at space assuming there must be more life out there, so they conclude there is another life after this one in space somewhere.

The Spiritually Minded Person

Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace

The carnal mind is at best trying to please GOD by doing something in the flesh. That something depends on what religion a person follows. THAT CARNAL MINDSET BRINGS DEATH.

Biblically speaking that carnal mind isn't really pursuing GOD at all but pursuing self or a self made god. Often this person doesn't even consider GOD because the fleshly appetites rule their life

When Adam was created he was formed out of the dust, a body of dirt. Then GOD breathed on him and he became a living being. As a living being, he had a spirit, a mind (soul), a body. 1st was his spirit meaning he was spirit led he was aware of and drawn close to GOD.When Adam sinned he became fleshly, no longer spirit lead but body led, he became body, mind, spirit. Now instead of having GOD 1st he had himself first. His fleshly appetites began to rule, proven by his desire to hide his nakedness from GOD. He did want to be open and honest before GOD.

The spiritually minded person has life that leads to peace. Living in harmony with GOD and HIS plan.

According to the Flesh

Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

To live according to the Spirit, = they are mindful of things that look good for GOD, things that promote HIS good. People will see my good works and glorify HIM.

People who live according to the flesh = will usually end up making the flesh look good

They are mindful of things that appeal to the flesh. If I obey all these rules then I will look good. People will see my good works and glorify me.

Jesus Did What the Law Could Not

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,

The Mosaic Law couldn't make me righteous, because my sinful nature prevented true obedience. The law didn't fail people (flesh) did.

Law of the Spirit

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death

The only way to become free from the law of death is to live in the law of the Spirit. When I walk in the Spirit, the law of the flesh doesn't apply. It's already been taken care of by JESUS.I am free from condemnation.

It's like being in an airplane that is going to crash. It will crash but you have a parachute, you’re not in the same situation as others without the parachute. In Christ Jesus

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

If I am “in” JESUS their will be no condemnation, in the flesh I will have it.

Romans 7 Vs.25 said through JESUS here

Romans 8 vs.1 say’s in JESUS.

Romans 7 Vs. 25 said through JESUS I serve the law with my mind rather then the flesh

Romans 8 vs.1 says being in JESUS I walk according to the spirit rather then the flesh.

The physical act may be the same but one is allowing JESUS to work through them the other is doing it on their own.

One in the Flesh is condemned for falling short by not doing all that they might have been able to do, the other in the Spirit is blessed for the good that they did do.

If they both did the same thing, how do we know who is in the Spirit and who is in the flesh?

Ones condemned the other is free, one carries quilt the other carries blessings.

Neither Slave to Sin or Righteousness

Romans 7:20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

I am either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. This is not a cop out statement so we could blame sin instead of self for or wrongs its is pointing out my inability

JESUS said, (John 15:5) "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

If I do something that bears fruit then I have obeyed JESUS. If I do something that bears bad fruit then I have obeyed SIN.

Thus, it is no longer I who do it, but sin (or JESUS) that dwells in me.

Internal Struggle

Romans 7:19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.

The good that I want to do, I DON'T. But actually I do the wrong I didn't want to do

We Must Die to the Flesh

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

Oh how wise is the person who comes to this correct conclusion. I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; When a person will recognize they must die to the flesh it can be very hard, but when they understand nothing good will come from the flesh it makes dieing to the flesh easier. We should have no confidence in or flesh; at it's best we'll fail.

I may have a want to do well, but I don't stay with it, my performance has proven this.
Paul is speaking personally here many don’t even have the want.

The Battle Within

Romans 7:17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

I don't want to disobey, but I find within myself a will to do wrong.

There is in all people a duel nature; a carnal fleshly nature and a spiritual nature.
One leads us to sin the other leads us to righteousness.
One condemns the other corrects.
One promotes guilt the other convicts… …
One is selfish the other is selfless.
One is demanding the other is yielding.

Earlier in Romas Paul said, we are a slave to the one we obey. (6:16).

The Law Points to What is Good & Right

Romans 7:16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.

Since I haven't obeyed the law, I don't blame the law for my wrong but I blame myself, I was wrong, BUT THE LAW WAS GOOD & RIGHT.

We Do What We Don't Want

Romans 7:15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.

Paul talks about his relationship with the Law, which is simular to our relationship.
Paul says, "I wanted to obey the law but I found within myself an inability to obey, I actually did what I didn't want to do. I practiced what I hated."

The Law Is Spititual, We Are Carnal

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

The law is spiritual meaning from GOD. The law has no faults.

But I am carnal (fleshly or non-spiritual).

Sold = given into sin. Meaning I have faults.

If I wasn't carnal, the law and I would of got along great. But because of my carnality I couldn’t meet the laws requirements.

The Problem Is Not With The Law

Romans 7:13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

That which is good would be the law. Has Paul died to the law, certainly not!

Sin is the problem and since the wages of sin is death (6:23), then sin was killing me (producing death).

But the problem was not with the law, actually I was the problem vs.14

Law Is Good When Used Properly

Romans 7:12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law is good when used properly, to point out my sin and need to get right. But being married to law is bad because I'll never meet the requirements.

No one will find righteousness through obedience to the law, that is not the purpose of the law.

Futility of Righteousness Obtain By Law

Romans 7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.

Law was the target and my missing the target birthed sin and sin brought death. It was a horrible relationship.

Anyone who really understands the futility of righteousness obtain by Law would never want to go back to it. IT'S A HORRIBLE RELATIONSHIP THAT KILL'S because of sin.

Law Brought Death

Romans 7:10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.

The law, that I thought, if I obeyed, I could obtain righteousness didn't show me righteousness but instead showed me death.

I thought having Law would be good, and we could have a wonderful relationship, but instead all Law could do was show my failure and inability to find righteousness. Law brought death.

Sin Revived And I Died

Romans 7:9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

Once upon a time, before I ever met Law, I was alive, even thought things where OK, but once Law put up the target I saw I was missing the mark (sinning) and Law said, sinners had to die.
