The Law Reveals Sin

Romans 7:8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.

Until the law was revealed, sin was unknown or unrevealed.

The law became the target; sin showed that I missed the target. The law did not show me how to hit the target; it only showed me I was missing the target.

The Law Is Not the Standard for Righteousness

Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet."

Law in itself is not sin, Law simply showed what was sin and what the requirement was. Without law I would of never known I was wrong. The problem was it pointed out my wrong rather then encouraging me towards righteousness.

The law was good in showing us our need for a savior, but law was not and should not be the standard of righteousness. When law is used as a standard of righteousness we'll all be miserable.

Serve in the Newness of the Spirit

Romans 7:6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

now we have been delivered from the law, my spouse named Law died when I introduced him to JESUS, so I married JESUS.

And now I'm no longer married to Law, who no matter how hard I tried, I could not satisfy, I was always falling short, never really feeling loved or desired, just hammered and corrected.

In all honesty Law's death was not a disappointment and I married JESUS on the same day.

It's interesting because my new marriage actually has a greater demand on me then Law every did. But now I serve for loves sake and I enjoy it so much more, I want to please JESUS and I never felt that way about Law.

Now I serve with a newness of Spirit. I don't serve the letter of Law but JESUS through His Spirit placed in my heart. It's such a better relationship.

Sinful Nature

Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

sinful passions That desire within us to do what we want to do. It is to Satisfy ourselves even though the Bible says don't do it. Our SINFUL NATURE is Allowing our life to go in that direction will lead us to death.

How the Law Works

Romans 7:2-4 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another; to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Verses 2-4 are an example of how the law works.

7:2 If a woman becomes a wife, she is no longer free as a single woman she is bound by the law to be a wife to that man and only that man.

7:3 As a wife if she married another man she a law-breaker deserving of death. But if her husband died she is no longer a wife and she is free to remarry. Something that would be a horrible sin became OK.

7:4 Just like a woman could remarry according to the law so also a JEW under the law could die to that law and come alive to another, JESUS.

That way they could bear fruit for GOD, because according to the law they are always missing the mark bearing no fruit. They would recognize their marriage or commitment to the law as ended, dead to the law and remarried to JESUS

Those Who Know the Law

Romans 7:1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?

those who know the law Now he's speaking to the Jew. Someone who wants to try and find righteousness by obeying the Old Testement laws.

If you want the law then you keep that law all your life. But within the law there are some cases where something that was illegal becomes legal.

The Gift From God Is Eternal Life

Product of Our Obedience to God

Romans 6:22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

I’ve been set free from that, I don't have to live that way. I can remove my sinfulness and replace it with Godliness. I can have fruits of holiness that's path is to everlasting life with JESUS. I CAN BE ON A PATH THAT LEADS TO EVERLASTING LIFE.

A fruit that once poisoned can now be a blessing;
the fruit that had no regard for righteousness can now be submerged in righteousness.

Because the fruit is no longer the product of my fleshliness but is the product of my obedience to GOD.

No Regard To Righteousness

Rom 6:20-21 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

When we lived satisfying the flesh;
Where did it get us?
What kind of lasting joy did it bring?

All it offered was a path to death and a time in my life I regret. A time when I paid no regard to righteousness. A time when my fruit was poison to all who would eat it.

It's the kind of mindset that has no problem transmitting sexual disease’s because after all someone gave it to me. Someone poisoned me so why don't I poison you. NO REGARD TO RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Sold Out For JESUS

Romans 6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

human terms because we are not really slaves, but it might be good to think of ourselves that way.We once gave our all to satisfying our fleshly desires, now lets give our all to satisfying GOD'S desires. LET'S present our members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

Lets go for it and see what GOD will do if we'll be sold out for JESUS. Lets give our all to JESUS. Let's live as hard for GOD as we did for our flesh.

Set Free From Sin To Serve God

Romans 6:17 -18 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

You obeyed the gospel and found salvation through JESUS.

GOD be thanked, and praised, and exalted and glorified... ...I've been set free from sin so I can serve GOD.

Titus 2:11-15 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you

Whom Do You Obey?

Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

What do you want to rule in your life?

You only get 2 choices. GOD or Not GOD (satan).

1. GOD ruling as we just discussed leads to a life of obedience to righteousness.

2. Not-god ruling leading to a life of obedience unto sin & death.

Seems kind of simple to find the answer, but it's probably the greatest area of attack in your life. Satan wants so badly for you to disobey GOD, no matter what you’re reasoning just become a slave to sin and not to GOD.

Die To Sin To Live For Him

Romans 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!

Same idea as in Romans 6 verse 1 & 2. Just because I have GOD'S grace doesn't give me a ticket to sin.

If I've really received HIS grace my desire should be to die to sin in order to live for HIM.

Instruments of Righteousness

Romans 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Present yourselves to GOD as instruments of righteousness, because you have followed (Romans 6 verses 8-12)

1st we know that we need to die with JESUS, BUT KNOWING ISN'T ENOUGH

2nd we came to HIM with that that I need to die to, A PRAYER RECOGNIZING MY INABILITY AND HIS ABILITY. My need to die in order to allow HIS ability to work through me.

3rd I reckon myself dead to it and alive to him I TAKE MY FAITH AND PUT IT TO ACTION

4th I see that, SIN can not reign in me when I do this, I don't have to obey it's lust.

5th I present myself unto GOD an instrument not just dead to sin but alive to HIM.

Rule Over Sin

Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

This does not happen automatically. We must either dethrone sin or obey its evil desires. Either JESUS reigns in our hearts or we do.

In order to allow JESUS to reign and dethrone sin we must die to the lordship of the flesh and come alive to the lordship of JESUS.

Sometimes it will be easy to die to self and come alive to JESUS other times it will be a struggle but should be done or JESUS will be pushed out of our live.

Much like what GOD told Cain,(Genesis 4:7) "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."

WE ALSO SHOULD RULE OVER SIN, AND GOD HAS PROVIDED THE WAY BY COMING ALIVE IN CHRIST.

Reckoning Ourselves DEAD TO SIN.

Romans 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

:: yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, and alive to GOD. Not just dead to sin! Reckoning is counting something as happened. It is faith in action ignoring circumstances & feelings.

Back in verse 6 it said, knowing this, that the old man was crucified. The death that we die spiritually is a death by crucifixion. In order to be crucified, we must have someone's help,
one can't crucify themselves.
So I must go to GOD with the thing that I need to die to and it is there that I will find the ability to come alive to GOD.

Normally when we come alive to sin we try and hide from GOD. We ignore HIM, we avoid HIM, we pretend HE’S not there... ... THIS IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF RECKONING OURSELVES DEAD TO SIN.

And if we don't we are alive to sin and dead to GOD.But I could be and should be alive to GOD and dead to sin.

Made Alive in the Spirit

Romans 6:10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

The death that HE died was a total and complete payment for all sins. PAID IN FULL. And the life that HE lived HE lived to GOD, not himself or anything else.

Our relationship with GOD begins at JESUS death; it is there where we must take care of cleansing our sins and allowing GOD'S grace to be implemented into our lives.

Then we move on into a life in CHRIST.

Peter wrote;

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, OK THAT COVERS THE DEATH PART that He might bring us to God, THAT WHY HE DID IT. BUT HERE HOW IT WORKS = being put to death in the flesh but THAT’S NOT SO BAD BECAUSE IT CAUSED ME TO BE made alive by the Spirit, I MUST PUT TO DEATH MY FLESHLINESS SO I CAN BE MADE ALIVE IN SPIRIT.

Failing to put to death means I can't come alive to HIS spirit.

Romans 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

knowing - this is the 3rd time in 9 verses Paul is saying we know something, also in vs.3 & 6

In Romans 6 vs. 3 we need to know that we died when we where baptized in HIM

In Romans 6 vs. 6 we needed to know that our death brought freedom from sin

now in Romans 6 vs.9 we need to know that JESUS has dominion over death or we might say dominion over the wages of sin.

New Life That Has Power Over Sin

Romans 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,

died being in the Indicative mood causes the "if" to means since or because, The if is not subjunctive which could imply one did or didn't die with Christ.

If you where justified by faith you must of died with Christ. And since you died with Christ you will live with Him.

Remember the question in verse 1 shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? GOD forbid or based on what we know we might say, that would be impossible.

If a death to self hasn’t taken place, GRACE CAN’T ABOUND. But with a death to self not only does grace abound but also sin’s hold is broken.

Not only are my sins washed away, but also I can have victory over them.

GOD DIDN’T JUST CLEAR A BELIEVERS SLATE, BUT HE GAVE THEM A NEW LIFE THAT HAS POWER OVER SINS GRIP.

Romans 6:7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

As a justified believer, I died, the old me and that death brought new life in JESUS as well as freedom from the grip of sin.

This is something that Satan does not want you to know either. As a justified believer you are no longer a slave to sin, you do not have to give in to sin, that old you that was in bondage to sin, DIED and the new you is freed from sin’s grip. What a victory it is for the believer who knows and experience’s this.

Walk In Newness of Life

Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life

we also should walk in newness of life. People read Romans chapter 5, and discover that Christ died for their sins, and receive Him into their hearts and all; but fail to take up the words of Romans chapter 6 and discover the life of a justified believer. THEY OFTEN WANT TO STAY IN CH.5 THINKING THEY DON'T HAVE TO MOVE INTO CH.6 AND BE RESPONSIBLE OR ACCOUNTABLE.

They want salvation, but not new life. It is impossible to have salvation without new life. They want resurrection from the dead without dying. The living doesn’t get resurrected only the dead do.

Sometimes people will ask, do I believe in Lordship salvation, I’m not sure what the phrase means but if JESUS is not LORD, which in the Bible HE is, then can a JESUS who is not Lord save?

Having JESUS as Lord is one of the best parts of living the Christian life. I’m not left on my own to figure out how to live my life. I have JESUS as my LORD I simple need to figure out what HE as my LORD wants me to do.

Babtized Into Christ

Romans 6:3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

I would bet many proclaiming Christians do NOT KNOW that. Satan doesn’t want us to know the whole truth; he only wants us to know bits & pieces. So we’ll miss out on the life JESUS has for us.
Baptized into Christ Jesus or in other places it reads the name of JESUS means being joined together with all that JESUS offers. NOT JUST THE PARTS A PERSON MAY LIKE.

Baptized into His death seems to be a missing link in the gospel of today. But it’s a wonderful part of Christianity. You see, dead to me means I can be alive to HIM; alive to me means I quench or die to HIM.

In Galatians Paul talks more abou this. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

In the Gospel of Luke, Luke tells us in Luke9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

When we are baptized, symbolically it means the old me that went under died and the new me was born again in JESUS. In order to be born again I have to die to self.

Dead to Sin

Romans 6:2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

Verse 2 begins Paul’s answer to this thinking as an answer to Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?.

Certainly not! GOD forbid, NO WAY! That thinking would be completely off base.we who died to sin IF we have died to sin then there is no way that we would continue to live in sin.

This idea of a Born Again Christains being dead to sins is threaded throughout the New Testement.

Galatians 5:24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness -- by whose stripes you were healed.

New testament Christianity clearly teaches that we die to sin not excuses it because grace will overshadow it.

Grace May Abound

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

As we finished ch.5 we’ve learned that justification is by faith not works and that GOD’S grace abounds above and beyond sin.

The problem with these wonderful truths is that if a person stops in chapter 5 and doesn’t continue to read on, they can come to the wrong conclusion. So ch. 6 tries to avoid drawing and incorrect conclusion.

Romans 6:1 This question is addressed because it might be possible for someone to misunderstand Pauls point by taking a verse out of context.

In this case based on what Paul wrote in 5:20 we need some clarification. (Romans 5:20) Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,

Replaced With Grace

Romans 5:20-21 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

The law exposes the sin. Sin means missing the mark. You don’t know how far your missing the mark until you put up the target. (law)

Once we see the law we see how much we missed the mark

Sin reigning in death or grace reigning unto eternal life.

Recap:

v. 17—Death vs. life: Death reigned through Adam, but Christians reign in life through JESUS.
v. 18—Condemnation vs. justification: Adam’s sin ushered the human race into condemnation; JESUS death brings justification with God.
v. 19—Disobedience vs. obedience: Adam disobeyed God, which caused us to be born into sin. JESUS obeyed God, which makes it possible for us to be free from sin.
v. 20—Law vs. grace: God did not give the Law to save mankind, but rather to expose how far we are missing the mark. Once we see that we see it is impossible to hit the mark, so GOD provided a free gift that allows HIS grace to be applied rather then HIS law.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

The new creation, which has received JESUS, no longer has sin reigning, IT HAS PASSED AWAY replaced with grace. Death does not reign, IT HAS PASSED AWAY replaced with life.

Jutification of Life

Romans 5:18 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.

The curse is automatic we are born into it, the free gift differs in that it must be received IT IS NOT AUTOMATIC. Judgment and condemnation or free gift resulting in justification.

Gift Of Righteousness

Romans 5:17 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

Just as Adam's sin brought a reign of death, so did the death and resurrection of JESUS bring a reign of life.

But this does not mean the reign of life is automatic, because it says, we must "receive" the free gift of abundance of grace and righteousness.

Condemnation or Justification

Romans 5:16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.

The choice comes down to condemnation or justification.

Gift by Grace

Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.

Since the curse affected many because of what one man started, so also the "free gift" of GOD'S grace through JESUS will abound to many.

Death Reigned From Adam

Romans 5:13-14 For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

Adam only had one law. Don't eat of that tree. When he broke the law he sinned, starting the curse to begin.

The curse “death” still reigned after Adam even before the law. It didn’t stop because of one mans wrong; IT BECAME A CANCER TRYING TO TAKE ANY AND ALL.

You Are Made One With God

Romans 5:11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

reconciliation. The King James translation uses the word atonement which helps avoid repetition of the word reconcile from vs.10. The word meanings are very similar,
So to try and show a difference we can say; vs.10's reconciled means your reestablished back into fellowship with GOD. vs.11 reconciliation means you've received atonement or complete forgiveness.

The Old Testament Hebrew atonement made a covering for the sins a (ko-far) but the New Testament Greek word for atonement (kat-al-lag-ay) means you are at one with GOD, because your sins are not covered but are removed as far as the Eest from the West. They’re put away.

Justified By His Blood

Romans 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Much more and that's not all. Paul will use this term 4 more times (10, 15, 17, 20) to prove his points in showing the benefits to having a love relationship with God through Jesus.

1st benefit mentioned here is this relationship that will save you from the coming wrath. That is the judgment that must come because of sin. A judgment that GOD must enforce to maintain HIS righteousness.

For the wages of sin is death.

But GOD in HIS great love has provided a way out of this judgment, JESUS.

His Great Love Looks Beyond Our Behavior

Rom 5:7-8 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

HE has already demonstrated HIS love, what we must ask ourselves is, will we respond to it?

1 John 4:9-11 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

In Romans verse 8, Paul is trying to explain the depth and character of GOD'S love for us.

Showing that maybe a person might die in the place of someone they view as good. BUT JESUS DID FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BAD LIVING IN THEIR SINS.

Jesus was willing to show his great love towards us by dieing for us before we even wanted to have anything to do with HIM. HIS great love looks beyond our behavior.

However in order for us to obtain it we must receive

Having already mentioned the pouring out of Gods love through the Holy Spirit(in Romans 5:5). Paul now explains the character of Gods love. Which seems to go far beyond our ability, I think to even comprehend.

without strength, = lost in our sins, not aware of God's love or plan of salvation through JESUS.

Christ died for the ungodly. = Sinners, all sinners.

Hope Does Not Disappoint

Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

My tribulation can disappoint (better word is shames) if I forsake my hope in GOD,
but if I don't my tribulation can draw me to a deeper love with GOD through the Holy Spirit that never shames. But instead actually draws me closer through the tribulations producing (vs.4)patience, character and hope

We need to look past the difficult event, knowing that GOD is in control. Sometimes I think we get like Job’s wife. Job 2:9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!"

The Holy Spirit serves many functions in the life of a believer; one very important function is for you to personally know that GOD loves you and HIS spirit can dwell in you is proof of that love.

1st HIS spirit is on the outside “with you” as JESUS said in John 14:17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Once a person accepts JESUS and becomes born again, the Holy Spirit enters their heart to serve many functions, PROOF THAT GOD LOVES YOU IS ONE.

GOD also proved HE loved us in what HE did through JESUS.
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Faith Through Experience

Romans 5:4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Notice the progression. Tribulation produces perseverance (patience), which produces character (experiences), which takes me back to hope (faith) in a GOD who loves me and knows what’s best for me

I would never choose to go this route, but thank GOD who loves me enough to not only bless me but to teach me though experiences.

Experiences that can strengthen my faith and keep me in that place that I will never be disappointed or ashamed.

Tribulation Produces Perseverance

Romans 5:3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;

We do?? We do when our eyes are on GOD.

Many Christians only want the blessings and don't believe GOD would have them go through difficult times. But they miss out on a development of perseverance and character that can only come through tribulations.

The late Keith Green once sang a song that said, "Bless me LORD bless me LORD you know that’s all I ever hear, no one aches, no one cares, no one even sheds one tear."I think Keith knew that if our relationship was just blessings, there would be no depth to our character, only shallowness.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

and in Matthew 7:13 " Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 "Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

When our thinking of Christianity is limited to blessing only we’re not following Biblical teachings.

I think the neat thing about tribulations is you know GOD is doing something. On the other side of that experience will be a deeper understanding of GOD. A closer relationship. Something better then we could of ever developed.

And remember GOD will not allow you to go through something that is beyond your ability. OH WE COULD QUIT AND FORSAKE GOD BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE GOD ALLOWED MORE THEN WE CAN HANDLE, IT'S BECAUSE WE WOULD NOT ALLOW GOD'S WAY IN OUR LIFE

The Biblical Christian life comes with outstanding blessing, times of abounding and it also comes with tuff tribulations, times of abasing. In both we should be rejoicing KNOWING that it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Our Hope Is In the Glory of God

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans Chapter 5 Paul tells us the blessings that come with justification by faith.
Blessings that I believe GOD wants us all to experience. As well as some difficulties that come with being a Christian.

Remember "Justified" means "just as if I never did it." The 1st result of justification by faith is peace with God. My slate is clean there is no record of my wrongs. God chooses to remember them NO MORE.

If justification depended on my works, some days I’d have peace and some days I would not, it would depend on my performance. There seems to be an inconsistency at times between my Christianity and my walk. I do not always do those things that are pleasing to GOD. I cannot say with Jesus “I do always those things that please the father,” I wish could but in all honesty I can't. Sometimes my works are really good other times they’re not.

Since my justification is dependant upon my faith in JESUS and HIS perfect works, not my imperfect works. I have peace and vs. 2 I also have access into GOD'S grace meaning I’ll get what I don't deserve or I’ll get that that GOD has for me.

Knowing this causes me to experience more blessings. I rejoice because my hope is in the glory of God or in the purposes of GOD. NOT MY ABILITY or LACK OF ABILITY. What a wonderful thing for GOD to do.

What A Blessing It Is When Our Faith Is In Jesus

Romans 4:25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification

because of our justification. Christ's resurrection was for our justification; i.e., as a proof of God's acceptance of His Son's sacrifice.

delivered up for our offences

raised up for our justification.

This is why it is so important we believe that JESUS died and rose again. HIS death takes away our offences and HIS raising replaces them with justification or righteousness.

WHAT A BLESSING IT IS - WHEN OUR FAITH IS IN JESUS.

Put Your Faith In Jesus

Romans 4:23-24 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him,24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,

GOD didn't record this story for Abraham’s sake period. But so we could see how it applies to our lives also. Abraham put his faith in GOD'S promises. AND SO DO WE WHEN WE PUT OUR FAITH IN JESUS.

Maintaining A Strong Faith

Romans 4:20-21 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

As we look at verses 19-21 there are some important insights to maintaining a strong faith.
1. not consider your own body (physical limitations)
2. vs.20 not waver at GOD'S promise through unbelief. GOD'S promises will be attacked and unbelief can creep in if you allow it.
3. vs.20 strengthen in faith by giving glory to GOD. Often or faith needs to be strengthened, the best way to do this is to say focused on GOD and HIS glory.
4. vs.21 fully convinced that GOD can do it. Once our eyes are on GOD you can be fully convinced. When our eyes are on self, or the probability we loose sight.

Belief When it Seems Impossible

Romans 4:18-19 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be." 19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb.

Abraham believed even when it seems impossible.

When you read of this story in Genesis 17 Abraham does discuss with GOD, Sarah and his old age. Abraham is contend with Ishmael but GOD say's "NO" not Ishmael the product of the flesh rather Isaac a miracle baby. The product of and old dead womb being brought back to life.

How To Have Impossible Faith

Romans 4:17 (as it is written, "I (god) have made you a father (ABRAHAM) of many nations") in the presence of Him (god) whom he (ABRAHAM) believed; God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;

Rewind: In Romans Chapter 3 the main subject is justification by faith not law or works. In Chapter 4 Paul used Abraham as his main Biblical character to prove his point showing Abraham was justified because he believed before the law and circumcision. Showing that the justification came from GOD’S grace not something Abraham deserved.

Now Paul moves the emphasis to faith. SOMETHING ABRAHAM DID NEED TO HAVE.

Romans 4:17 is Quoting Genesis17:5.

Abraham was 99 yrs. old when God promised another child, Isaac. GOD'S promise seemed impossible, in the physical it was impossible, just like the promise of Jesus coming back from the dead.

NOW WE’LL SEE HOW TO HAVE IMPOSSIBLE FAITH.

1ST it is important to know this about GOD. He calls those things which do not exist as though they did; remember from GOD'S prospective the past and future can be seen at the same time, so HE can see things done before they ever came to us.

This is difficult for some to understand. I like using a Parade Analogy. IT IS LIKE A BLIMP OR HELICOPTER SEEING THE ORDER OF THE PARADE, FLOAT BY FLOAT, FROM THE SKY. WHEN THOSE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD CAN ONLY SEE THE FLOATS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THEM.

Justification By Faith

Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, (JEWS) but also to those who are of the faith (GENTILES) of Abraham, who is the father of us all

Faith so that GRACE may prevail. Rather then law so that the WRATH may prevail or circumcision so that WORKS may prevail.

The promise is to all who accept justification by faith. That makes Abraham your father and you part of his seed. If you’ll accept this method of justification.

Faith Brings Justification

Romans 4:14-15 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect,15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

The law does NOT bring justification it brings "wrath" or judgment. Basically the opposite.

Faith brings justification the Law brings the need for justification.

Righteousness of Faith

Romans 4:13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

The promise was made to Abraham long before Moses ever wrote the law.

Therefore Abraham’s seeds would be those who will accept righteousness through faith as he did.

Circumcision Cannot Save--Only Faith Can

Romans 4:12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.

Paul makes clear that circumcision cannot save--only faith can. God never wanted a person to have an object or one time act, (like circumcision or saying a sinners prayer) to be their confirmation in GOD'S ability to justify.

GOD simply wanted our confirmation to be in the fact that you believe you can come to him. Weather you have been good or bad you can still come.

With faith as the only necessary ingredient there would be no reason a person couldn't come to GOD no matter what may have happened.

Isaiah 1:18 " Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

Confirm the Reality of Faith

Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also,

Circumcision served as God's seal to Abraham that he was righteous.

It was an after product to confirm the reality of faith. The Holy Spirit enters our heart after salvation as a seal or confirmation.

He Accounted It To Him For Righteousness.

Romans 4:10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised.

Paul mentions in verse 10 that Abraham's righteousness by faith preceded his circumcision.

In Genesis 15:6 we are told, And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

again in Genesis 17:24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

Pauls is trying to show that you can't add circumcision, or keeping the law for justification. These are TWO THINGS THAT THE JEWS TRIED TO ADD.

Justification Is For All People

Romand 4:9 Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

Once again Paul is pointing out that this justification is for all people not just the Jews. And that you can't add anything to faith to merit justification.

That is, "to him who does not work" for justification? Something satan would love to get us all involved in. This is why different 'so called' Christain Cults are so busy knocking at doors; they are convinced that they must earn their justification.

DON'T MISUNDERSTAND - Being justified doesn't mean we do nothing; we should be His own special people, zealous for good works. (Titus 2:14) But not to merit something rather as a way of saying thank-you and confirming that GOD is working in me to will and do of HIS good pleasure. (Phil. 2:13). Justified By Faith

Romans 4:1-3 What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.3 For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."

Paul continues in chapeter 4 to support his point made in ch.3 that people can ONLY be justified by faith apart from the law. He uses Abraham, to prove his point, Abraham the 1st to receive the promise.

A SURE FOUNDATION TO ANY Jew.

By using Abraham Paul can show that justification by faith is not a new concept, at all.

Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. This clearly tells us that ABRAHAM was justified by faith, not by works.

Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

We establish the law why because without the law there is no knowledge of SIN.

We establish the law by using it to point people to JESUS

When someone understands GOD’S plan of salvation they see that the Law & Prophets points us to JESUS.

They see a picture of JESUS.
Seeing JESUS as the Passover lamb.

Romans 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith

One of the great things about GOD'S plan is there is no room for personal boasting. We can freely receive salvation by placing our faith in JESUS, not on our own merit.

This way the attention will be put on GOD & JESUS not anything or any one else.

Where Is Your Faith?

Romans 3:26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

at the present time as opposed to Old Testement times. GOD'S righteousness is revealed, by being the just and the justifier of anyone who has their faith in JESUS.
Not just believing that Jesus existed but also accepting HIM and HIS teachings by being a follower of HIM.

No one will stand before GOD based on their own merit, but will stand based on where they put their faith.

If our faith is in our deeds we'll lose.

If our faith is in some law we'll lose.

If our faith is in giving we'll lose.

Romans 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

Man Without God

Romans 3:12-18 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one."13 "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips"; 14 "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness."15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood;16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known."18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."

In Romans 3 verses 10-18 Paul quotes and paraphrases a number of Old Testament passages--
The first passages he quotes come from King David in the book of Psalms.

Psalms 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;Their inward part is destruction;Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue.

Psalms 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity.

Psalms 14:1-3 They have all turned aside,They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

Psalms 36:1 An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked:There is no fear of God before his eyes.

Psalms 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; The poison of asps is under their lips. Selah

The latter passages he quotes come from the Prophet Isaiah in the book of Isaiah.
Isaiah 59:7-8 Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood;Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths. 8 The way of peace they have not known, And there is no justice in their ways; They have made themselves crooked paths; Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.

Again up to this point so far he has only supported his statements by logic or reason now he supports them scripturally. To point ou the evil in man and his need for God.

Let Your Light Shine

Romans 3:5-6 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.) 6 Certainly not! For then how will God judge the world?

In Verse 5 Paul Asks another question here. Does God use man's sin to glorify Himself? And if HE does then HE is wrong to inflict wrath on the sinner.

In Verse 6 he answers it. No, God does not use man's sin to glorify Himself. If HE did He would have to abandon all judgment.

If that where the case then a person could say, I sin so GOD can show HIS righteousness. That would be the opposite of what GOD is trying to do.

Jesus Said in Matthew.5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

NOT YOUR BAD WORKS.

God Will Always Remain Perfect

Romans 3:4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: "That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged."

The answer come for the question proposed in the verses before when Paul asks the question Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect

NO WAY! Their unbelief could not stop GOD'S faithfulness. Could not stop GOD'S truth from remaining truthful.

Every man could have been a liar and GOD'S word would still be true.

The statement "let God be true but every man a liar" could say Let God keep on being true even though every man becomes a liar. This quotes part of Psalm 116:11 I said in my alarm, "All men are liars."

Then David wrote in Psalm 51:4 "That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged."

The idea here is that mankind will do wrong and misrepresent GOD. BUT GOD WILL ALWAYS REMAIN PERFECT and HIS words will always be justified. Mankind’s unfaithfulness will not cause GOD'S words to be unfaithful.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Unbelief Will Not Change a Thing

Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect?

We learned in verse 1&2 that the Jews where giving this special knowledge and responsibilities and were GOD'S representatives. WHAT IF SOME DID NOT BELIEVE?

Does their unbelief stop GOD from accomplishing HIS plan?

Absolutely not!

Their unbelief will not change a thing.

Just because a person doesn't believe in hell doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

With Knowledge Comes Responsibility

Rom 3:1-2 What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?2 Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God

The Jew's had some advantages. The chief one being, they were entrusted with the oracles of God = the very words of God, Exodus 19-20; Deuteronomy 4:8.

They did a great job of keeping the word accurate. One would write a letter another would view. If at any time a mistake was made they would trash it all, no cross outs or erasers aloud. THE JEWS DID A GREAT JOB AT KEEPING THE ORACLES PURE.

They were also the race that the Messiah came from (Isaiah 11:1-10; Matthew. 1:1-17).
However this did not make them better than anyone else. Actually it made the Jews even more responsible to live up to Gods requirements. Because with knowledge comes responsibility.

Inside Work of the Heart

Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

Real circumcision is not physical but spiritual. It’s an inside work of my heart being turned over to GOD. It is not an outside look or ritual that makes me right.

Satan got away with getting knowledgeable & confident people off-track. Let’s not let him duplicate the same tactic on us. LET YOUR LIFE BE ONE OF TRUSTING AND OBEYING So others will bring Glory to GOD not blasphemy.

To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice

Romans 2:27 Will GOD not honor obedience over ritual?

David wrote in the book of Psalm chapter 51
Psalm 51:16-17 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart -- These, O God, You will not despise.

Samuel also said to Saul;
1 Samuel 15:22 Then Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.

The Intent of the Heart

Romans 2:24-26 For "the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you," as it is written. 25 For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?

"the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you," Paul begins by quoting Isaiah 52.5

Because their circumcision is coupled with disobedience, it has become the object of the Gentiles blasphemy. If you say you are a believer in Christ, but then do the things, or take part in things that you KNOW God does not want you to do, your example becomes like blasphemy to those around you who don't believe.

On the Same Note: Just because someone has not been physically circumcised, but he lives his life in obedience to GOD, IS HE NOT BETTER THEN ONE CIRCUMCISED AND NOT OBEYING GOD.

Do You Follow the Same Rules

Romans 2:22-23 You who say, "Do not commit adultery," do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?

Paul is asking each person reading this letter, How are you doing personally at obeying what you teach others to obey?
Do you follow the same rules? Or are you exempt because you think you have some special in because you’re a father, preacher, cop, judge, teacher, Jew or whatever the excuse my be.

Practice What You Preach

Romans 2:21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?

Since you have it and teach it, DO YOU DO IT YOURSELVES or in other words DO YOU PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH?

Guide to the Blind

Romans 2:19-20 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law

These Romans were so confident in this Law, that they felt they could show others what they must do to get right with GOD.

Indeed You Are Called

Romans 2:1718 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, 18 and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,

The Jews at the time felt that they could Rest in the law by having the Law
and then Boast about having GOD

They clamined to know HIS will by having the Law.

Just because you know of the law, and think you know God does not mean that you are living in His Will.

God Will Judge the Secrets of Men

Romans 2:16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

Paul also wrote the book of Ephesians saying; Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them

Now Paul begins to expose the Jew for the folly in what they believe.

note: From verse 1 through 16 the subject has to do with a coming judgment, something Paul preached as well as Jesus.

Pauls point is that GOD is the judge, not man.

Our part as man is to show the path to JESUS where an acquittal can be found to avoid condemnation.
